What is Spravato?
Spravato (esketamine) is an FDA-approved nasal spray for adults with treatment-resistant depression, used with an oral antidepressant. It’s given only at certified treatment centers, with at least 2 hours of monitoring after each dose. Reign-Bow Brain Treatment Center in Lombard, Illinois is preparing to offer Spravato alongside TMS for depression.
What Spravato is
Spravato is the brand name for esketamine, a medication related to ketamine. It’s given as a nasal spray and works differently from standard antidepressants. It is FDA-approved for adults with treatment-resistant depression, and for depressive symptoms in adults with major depression who have suicidal thoughts or behavior, together with an oral antidepressant.
How treatment works
- Given in the clinic only. You use the spray yourself under supervision. Spravato can’t be taken home.
- Monitored for at least 2 hours after each dose, because it can cause dissociation, dizziness, sleepiness and a rise in blood pressure.
- A set schedule. Usually twice a week for the first 4 weeks, then weekly, then weekly or every other week.
- Arrange a ride. You can’t drive or operate machinery until the next day after a restful sleep.
Spravato or TMS?
Both are options when antidepressants haven’t helped enough. TMS uses magnetic pulses, involves no medication and lets you drive yourself home. Spravato is a medication with a longer clinic visit and a ride home each time. Some people are a better fit for one than the other, and we’ll talk through both at your consultation.
