Psychotherapy for adults, children and families

Brain stimulation can change how the brain is working. Therapy helps you put that change to use in daily life. We offer psychotherapy for adults, children and families at our Lombard clinic, on its own or alongside TMS, with one team that talks to each other.

Who therapy is for

  • Adults working through depression, anxiety, OCD or a hard stretch of life
  • Children and teens who need help with big feelings, worries, behavior or school stress
  • Families, including parents and siblings, who want to work on things together
  • Anyone in TMS treatment who wants support while their symptoms change, and a plan for staying well afterward

Why we offer both

TMS and talk therapy approach the same problem from two directions. TMS works on the activity of brain networks. Therapy works on the thoughts, habits and relationships those networks support.

Many people find that therapy becomes easier to use once treatment starts to help: there is more energy for the work, and new skills stick better. That is the reason we built therapy into the clinic.

What therapy looks like here

Your first session is a conversation about what has been happening and what you want to change. From there, you and your therapist agree on goals and on how often to meet. With children, parents are part of that conversation from the start.

If you’re also having TMS, we schedule therapy around your sessions and share notes within the team, with your permission, so your care points in one direction.

Family therapy

A diagnosis affects everyone in the house. Family sessions give parents, children and siblings a place to talk about what is hard, agree on how to handle it and notice what is going well. For families of autistic children, that can mean working on routines, communication and the strain that builds up between appointments.

Therapy for specific conditions

For OCD, exposure and response prevention is the best-studied therapy, and TMS was studied alongside it. For anxiety and depression, cognitive behavioral approaches have the strongest evidence. Ask us which approaches our therapists use for your situation, and whether we’re the right fit or should help you find someone who is.

Common questions

Do you offer therapy for children?

Yes. We see children and teens as well as adults, and parents are involved from the first session.

Do you offer family therapy?

Yes. Family sessions can include parents, children and siblings.

Can I keep my current therapist?

Yes. Many of our TMS patients do. With your permission, we’ll keep your therapist informed about your treatment.

Is therapy covered by insurance?

Often, yes. Coverage depends on your plan. We verify your benefits before your first visit. We work with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna and Aetna.

Do I have to be having TMS to come for therapy?

Call us and we’ll talk through what you’re looking for. If we’re not the right fit, we’ll say so and point you toward someone who is.
