Questions and answers
What is qEEG-guided TMS?
It’s transcranial magnetic stimulation planned from a recording of your own brain activity. We record a qEEG, use it together with your history to choose where and how to stimulate, and repeat it during care to check progress.
What is TMS FDA-cleared for?
TMS systems are cleared for major depression in adults (since 2008), for OCD (since 2018), for anxiety symptoms that occur with depression, and as an add-on treatment for depression in ages 15 to 21. Clearance is specific to particular devices. See the full table on our TMS page.
What does off-label mean?
It means a clinician is using an FDA-cleared device for a purpose other than the one it was cleared for. That is legal and common in medicine. It also means there is less research behind that use. TMS for autism and ADHD is off-label, and we say so on those pages.
Is TMS safe?
TMS has a well-described safety profile after more than fifteen years of clinical use. The common side effects are scalp discomfort and headache. Seizures are rare. People with metal or implanted devices in or near the head generally can’t have TMS.
Does TMS hurt?
Most people feel a tapping on the scalp. It can be uncomfortable at first and usually gets easier within a few sessions.
What ages do you treat?
We see children, teens and adults. Whether TMS is appropriate for a particular child is decided at the consultation, after reviewing their history and EEG.
How long does treatment take?
It depends on the condition and on how you respond. A typical TMS course for depression is weekday sessions for four to six weeks. Your schedule is set after the brain map.
Do I have to stop my medication or my current therapy?
No. Most people continue both. Medication changes should always go through your prescriber, and we’re glad to coordinate with your other providers.
Do you accept insurance?
We work with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna and Aetna and verify your benefits before treatment. Coverage depends on your plan and diagnosis. More about insurance and cost.
Who oversees treatment?
Our medical director reviews every treatment plan before it starts, and care is overseen by our board-certified medical team throughout.
Do you offer therapy for children and families?
Yes. We offer psychotherapy for adults, children and families, on its own or alongside TMS.
Do I need a referral?
You can contact us directly. If your insurance plan requires a referral or prior authorization, we’ll tell you when we verify your benefits.
Is this the same as MeRT?
No. MeRT is a trademarked system offered only by licensed clinics, and Reign-Bow doesn’t offer it. Our qEEG-guided TMS is planned by our own clinical team and reviewed by our medical director. Why families choose Reign-Bow.
Where are you located?
55 W 22nd Street, Lombard, IL 60148. We have one clinic and see families from Chicago and from across the western and south suburbs. Directions and drive times.
