MeRT Q & A

What is MeRT?

MeRT is a mental health treatment that reduces your symptoms by improving your brain function. How? By stimulating the areas of the brain responsible for your symptoms.

Mental health disorders occur when a certain brain area isn’t functioning to its fullest potential.

Stimulating the area with repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) improves your mental health by:

  • Increasing nerve activity
  • Boosting neurotransmitter levels
  • Promoting new nerve connections
  • Developing nerve pathways (enhancing nerve communication)
  • Improving communication between different brain areas

Your symptoms improve as your brain regains vitality and optimal nerve function returns.

How is MeRT individualized to meet my needs?

MeRT uniquely delivers customized treatments by combining rTMS with two diagnostic procedures: a qualitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and an electrocardiogram (EKG).

The qEEG reveals the electrical activity in your brain (your brainwaves). Armed with this information, your provider can map nerve activity, identify the exact brain area needing rTMS, and determine the pulse rate and power level for your neurostimulation.

The EKG shows your heart’s electrical activity. Comparing your brainwave and EKG results shows if the two are in sync, information that helps your provider fine-tune your rTMS session.

Who can benefit from MeRT?

Reign-Bow Treatment Center often uses MeRT to help people with:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

MeRT can also support your recovery from a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

What should I expect during MeRT treatment?

The MeRT process begins with the EKG and an eyes-closed (resting) qEEG. Your provider places self-adhesive electrodes on your body for the EKG, so you don’t need to worry about having electrodes stuck to your head.

Instead, you wear a cap equipped with electrodes that pick up brain waves. Your provider also applies a gel that prevents interference and ensures an accurate EEG.

When it’s time for your rTMS session, you sit in a comfortable, serene room, and the technician places the FDA-cleared rTMS device next to your head, targeting your specific brain area. Then, you relax for 45 minutes while the machine sends magnetic pulses painlessly into your brain.

To achieve optimal results, you’ll need five rTMS sessions each week for 6-8 weeks. Your provider does a follow-up qEEG every 10 sessions to see the changes in your brain activity, review your progress, and determine if your treatment should be adjusted.
